FOOD PANTRY URGENT REQUEST
THANK YOU for answering our call to help with our food pantry, which is still open in Fr. Ray Hall on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and serving more people than ever due to the current crisis. The following letter from Fr. Tim shared on Palm Sunday highlights the background and explains the need for financial donations and volunteers. We have been so heartened at the large numbers of you that have stepped forward to offer your help. You can learn more about your incredible efforts in this Washington Post story and local ABC news segment. As the ABC reporter says, “This is what hope looks like in a crisis.” You are that hope and we are so grateful. It is only with your help and generosity that we can continue to provide food to our sisters and brothers during this crisis. We are still in need of your help in the following ways:
1. Monetary Donations: Monetary donations of any amount are appreciated. Just $16 can help support a family for one entire week; $64 supports a family for an entire month! You may contribute by visiting this page. Donations can also be dropped off (in a safe way) during office hours or mailed by check to the parish.
2. Volunteers: Thank you very much for volunteering to help the food pantry. Currently we have enough volunteers, but if this changes, we will update you.
3. Food: We especially need donations of the following: bags of rice, any size (bigger ones will be split into 1 lb. bags), 1 lb. bags of dry beans or cans of beans (prefer black, pinto or small red beans), boxes of pasta, 24 oz. plastic jars or cans of pasta sauce, macaroni & cheese, low-sugar cereals, 16 oz. cans of corn or green vegetables, canned fruit, canned tuna in water or oil, 48 oz. bottles of oil, and bags of masa harina for tortillas (not cornmeal). There will be bins outside at the back of Fr. Ray Hall at the following times: Monday-Friday 10am-1pm, Saturday 4-6pm & Sunday 11:30am-1:30pm. Please drop off food in the bins during these times. The bins will be under the overhead near the back door. Note the Sunday hours are new hours, are effective June 14th to accommodate the volunteer drop offs of produce from local farmers markets.
4. Spread the word! Please consider sharing this information with your friends and loved ones, your neighborhood email listservs, and on your social media pages. The Arlington/Northern Virginia communities have been incredible, and we are hopeful that this support will continue so that we may best serve our community.
CORONAVIRUS ALERT: The Food Pantry will remain open at this time. Special procedures are in effect to allow for the recommended social distancing. La despensa de alimentos permanecerá abierta en este momento. Tenemos procedimientos especiales para permitir el distanciamiento social recomendado.
Each 2nd weekend of the month we invite the parish to contribute to a monthly food drive to stock the pantry shelves with donations of canned goods and non-perishable items for our local neighbors. Re-useable grocery bags and a shopping list are distributed for your convenience. The monthly Food Drive does not provide for the current demand -- an average of 200 bags of food are distributed to area residents each week to help supplement their grocery needs; nearly 10,400 bags per year -- making food donations necessary throughout the month. Ministry opportunities include helping with the monthly food drives, sorting and bagging food, shopping for what is still needed after donations come in and distributing the bags on Wednesday mornings.
