Holy Days of Obligation
The following are Holy Days of Obligation (days on which Mass attendance is required) for Latin Rite Catholics in the United States:
* When the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and All Saints fall on a Saturday or Monday, U.S. Catholics of the Latin Rite are not obligated to attend Mass that day.
NOTE: Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and Thanksgiving ARE NOT Holy Days of Obligation, although church attendance on those days is strongly encouraged.
Days of Fasting and Abstinence
The following are days of fasting and abstinence in 2023 for Latin Rite Catholics in the United States:
The obligation to abstain from meat on the Fridays of Lent is an important element of the Church’s observance of the penitential nature of this holy season.
This year, March 17, the Friday of the Third Week of Lent, corresponds with Saint Patrick’s Day, traditionally an occasion for joy-filled celebrations in this diocese. Bishop Burbidge, taking into consideration both past practice and present circumstances, has judged that it would serve the spiritual good of the faithful and has granted to the faithful of the Diocese of Arlington, as well as to any visitors or travelers who may be physically present within the territory of this diocese, a dispensation from the obligation of abstinence from meat on March 17, 2023.
Those taking advantage of this dispensation, however, are exhorted to undertake a work of charity, an exercise of piety, or an act of comparable penance on some other occasion during the Third Week of Lent.
In addition, all Fridays during Lent between February 24, 2023 and March 31, 2023 are days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Rite Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.
